In 2010, Great Lakes Restoration Partners for Clean Streams, a local nonprofit supporting the Maumee RAP, received a $1.36 million Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grant from U.S. EPA for habitat restoration in the Maumee Area of Concern and partnered with the Boy Scouts of America to carry out work at Camp Miakonda, the sixth oldest Boy Scout camp in the nation. The camp had a nonfunctioning lake because of heavy sedimentation, while the neighboring Ottawa River/Tenmile Creek was eroding its banks and shrinking the buffer between it and Lake Sawyer. The project also addressed wetland remediation and the revitalization of two tributaries within the camp. Through partnership in the Maumee Area of Concern, Partners for Clean Streams enlisted the aid of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers through an agreement to study the area for multiple years. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers conducted surveys, took ecological samples, and provided hydrological models that helped create restoration plans and ensure the project would not cause flooding. The work was a resounding success and a positive step toward removing several Beneficial Use Impairments established by U.S. EPA for the Ottawa River Watershed. Along the Ottawa River, crews reduced erosion by installing in-stream structures called Locked Logs, Bendway Weirs, and Longitudinal Peaked Stone Toe Protection, while creating in-stream habitat and stabilizing and protecting more than 650 feet of stream bank. These structures also made river access easier for Scouts and visitors. At Lake Sawyer, over 10,000 cubic yards of sediment were removed, improving fish habitat and increasing water circulation by channeling water into the Ottawa River through an overflow channel. At Hartman Ditch, stream bank stabilization with coconut matting, stone armoring, and v-notch weirs directed flow and reduced erosion. At Cunningham Ditch, a cascade replaced a section where water had once been piped underground for the former shooting sports area, slowing the water, reducing bank erosion, and supporting a new outdoor educational area. Nearly five acres of wetlands were revitalized and created by removing invasive plant species and replanting with native species, improving wildlife diversity and reducing the impact of flooding in and around the wetlands.
