Commodore Thomas Macdonough was the victorious commander of the American fleet in the naval battle of Plattsburg on September 11, 1814. Remembered as a gallant officer, an exemplary citizen, and a national hero, he built the Saratoga and other American ships at Vergennes, which later won a notable victory over the British fleet on Lake Champlain.
