The Kanienʼkehá꞉ka people have lived here for thousands of years before the formation of either the U.S. or Canada and are an integral part of the history of both countries. Other present-day Mohawk communities are Wáhta, Tyendinaga, Kahnawake, Kanesatake, Ganienkeh, and Kanatsiohareke, and Ohsweken, Six Nations, Grand River Territory, is also home to many Kanienʼkehá꞉ka. Akwesasne is a sovereign Mohawk territory governed under the Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy by the Mohawk Nations Council of Chiefs and by the elected councils, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne. The Mohawk Nation is one of the six nations in the Iroquois Confederacy. A sacred Huron messenger led these nations from warring with one another to accepting the responsibilities of working together in peace. The present Six Nations are Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Senaca, and Tuscarora. The Six Nations are also called Haudenosaunee, meaning "People Who Make A House," and the nations are meant to live as one family under the same roof, not all the same but all related.
