Confederate opposition to Federal crossings of Peachtree Creek was stronger west of Nancy’s Creek than east because high, wooded ridges lined the south bank. On July 19, 1864, two days of severe fighting were required for the 14th Corps to secure lodgments on the south side. Two brigades forced a crossing at the mouth of Green Bone Creek, five miles west, supported by a third beyond Nancy’s Creek, while two brigades of Baird’s division made a night crossing at Howell’s Mills on an improvised bridge. On July 20, Johnson’s entire division followed Baird, and one and a half miles west, Morgan’s brigade gained the high bluff after a 24-hour fight at Moore’s Mill.
