Henry Eastman Day was born on 6 Feb 1824 in Limerick, Maine, died on 17 Oct 1898 in Draper, and arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on 2 July 1850. A father, community figure, and spiritual leader, he played a role in the 1857 crisis as Johnston's Army approached Salt Lake City to put down a supposed Mormon Rebellion. Ordered to destroy the army's supply wagons, Henry joined 25 other men under Lott Smith, acting on Brigham Young's orders, and persuaded a corps of 100 that additional men would come if summoned. The soldiers then surrendered their firearms, were placed under guard, and their supply wagons were burned. Afterward, Henry served alone as a pioneer sentinel in Echo Canyon, watching the advance of Johnson's Army and helping secure time to negotiate peace. He was also one of Draper's original settlers and built the second home in the community.
