Lone Peak, an 11,260-foot summit in the Wasatch Range southeast of Salt Lake City, is one of the best-known and most prominent mountains along the Wasatch Front. Straddling Utah and Salt Lake counties at the center of the Lone Peak Wilderness, it rises above Draper and is visible across much of the Salt Lake Valley. Its steep granite terrain, formed largely from quartz monzonite, has long drawn hikers and climbers, with Bells Canyon preserving the name of early summit climber Richard Bell Sr. Routes such as Jacob's Ladder and Cherry Canyon reflect its rugged backcountry character, while tragedies including a 1936 plane crash underscore the mountain's hazards.
