On the shore of Lake Michigan in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, this museum centers on the maritime history of the Great Lakes and Wisconsin, linking the region’s working waterfront, shipbuilding, and life on the lake. Founded in 1969 as the Manitowoc Submarine Memorial Association, it is best known for the submarine USS Cobia, which arrived in 1970, became part of the museum in 1986, and that year was named a National Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Restored and still used for tours and overnight programs, Cobia anchors exhibits that also include the Chief Wawatam steam engine, shipbuilding, shipwrecks, model ships, and temporary displays.
