Old Shorter Hill is a 676-foot summit in Rome, Georgia, and one of the city’s Seven Hills. Originally called Shelton Hill after a principal local landowner, it took on a new identity through its association with Cherokee Baptist Female College, founded there in 1873. After Alfred and Martha Shorter donated to the school in 1877, it was renamed Shorter College. The college remained on the hill until moving outside downtown Rome in 1910. Following Martha Shorter’s death, the summit became known as Old Shorter Hill, preserving the memory of the college’s first home and its place in Rome’s educational history.
