The first shovel of earth for Somerville Dam was turned on September 22, 1962, by Lyndon B. Johnson, then Vice President of the United States. The dam was built to control flooding on Yegua Creek, which in the 46 years prior to 1958 had flooded 43 times, costing lives and crops. The project was finished in 1967.
