Circa 1890, East Main Street stood on the south side next to the Public Square, now the gazebo park. As early as 1823, Centerburg was a livery stop for stage coaches traveling from the north and east to the state capital. In the late 1800s, Centerburg had two hotels. The hotel shown was originally the Lyons Hotel, then the Reynolds Hotel, and finally the Park Hotel. It had a restaurant overlooking the square and 22 rooms, and it was connected to the Park Livery for local transportation needs. The hotel was demolished in 1936 to make way for a gasoline station, and the site is now occupied by Subway. The two men crossing the street are based on a photo of Wilbur and Orville Wright.
