This area of the Pennsylvania Wilds offers historical treasures, pioneer stories, natural beauty, and small-town charm through destinations including the Kinzua Viaduct, the Kinzua Bridge Scenic Byway, the Marilla Bridges Trail, the Longhouse National Scenic Byway, and the Smethport Mansion District. The Kinzua Viaduct spans the Kinzua Creek valley, and when it was completed in 1882 it was the longest and highest railroad viaduct in the world; after a tornado partially destroyed it in 2003, the remaining towers continued to offer views from the Skywalk. The Kinzua Bridge Scenic Byway connects Route 6 to Kinzua Bridge State Park and passes towns such as Mt. Jewett, where descendants of Swedish settlers celebrate their heritage. The Marilla Bridges Trail is a 1-mile pedestrian and bike trail around Marilla Reservoir with wooden bridges, spruce trees, a stonework dam, and access to the longer Marilla Springs Trail. The 29-mile Longhouse National Scenic Byway follows the Allegheny River and circles the Kinzua Creek Arm of the Allegheny Reservoir, with views from Rimrock Overlook and access to Kane's museums, festivals, wineries, and artisan shops in the Allegheny National Forest. In Smethport, the Mansion District includes more than 30 buildings from the 18th and early 19th centuries built for wealthy bankers and timber and oil barons.
