James R. McConnell, born in 1887 and killed in 1917, was a Carthage resident and decorated World War I aviator who flew with the Lafayette Escadrille. He was honored by Gutzon Borglum's 1918 sculpture "The Aviator" located in Charlottesville, Virginia.
