Buchanan's Birthplace State Park preserves the rural site on Tuscarora Mountain near Cove Gap where James Buchanan, fifteenth president of the United States, was born in 1791 and spent his first six years. Then called Stony Batter, the family settlement was a frontier stop that included buildings, a store, and an orchard serving westbound travelers. The park also centers on a memorial made possible by Harriet Lane Johnston, Buchanan's niece and White House hostess, whose trust secured the property after her death. Acquired in 1907 and accepted by Pennsylvania in 1911, the site became a modest memorial park rather than a major recreation area.
