James Buchanan, a lawyer, statesman, diplomat, and fifteenth President of the U.S., lived here from 1796 to 1807 after being born in Stony Batter. Patrick Gass, later a sergeant and carpenter for the winter quarters on the Lewis and Clark expedition from 1803 to 1806, worked here as an apprentice from 1794 to 1795.
