Built in approximately 1910 in the plains cottage architectural style, this house was moved in 1914 by Canyon founder Lewis T. Lester from the western side of town to this location. Because it stood near West Texas State Teachers College, later West Texas A&M University, it was rented to male students attending the school. The house became notable in 1917 when Georgia O’Keeffe, an internationally renowned artist who taught at West Texas State Teachers College from 1916 to 1918 and boarded across the street, painted two watercolors of it from her second-floor window. Roof with Snow is regarded as one of her most important early works from a period of experimentation with watercolors, while House With Red Sky is lesser known but also marks an important stage in her artistic development. Over the years the house was home to many individuals and families, including community and university leaders. Among them was Frank Kimbrough, who lived there and later served as football coach and athletic director of West Texas State University from 1947 to 1971 after an accomplished career as a football player and coach at several institutions; after his death, the university football stadium was named in his honor.
