At the Second Battle of Reams Station, Confederate soldiers advanced against the Union lines held here by Colonel Lewis Crandell's brigade, whose command included companies from various New York regiments. The Union earthworks stood near the former bed of the Petersburg (Weldon) Railroad, where a deep cut and high embankment separated cannon west of the railroad from reserve ammunition to the east, making resupply difficult and dangerous. As the gray lines swept forward, twenty-three-year-old Lieutenant Colonel Willie Pegram brought his artillery forward at a full gallop in support of the infantry assault, and his guns raked the Union line. In three separate assaults through woods and fields, Georgians, North Carolinians, South Carolinians, and Virginians drove Hancock from his position. Although the Confederates won the battle, the Union army kept its hold on the Petersburg (Weldon) Railroad and slowed the flow of supplies reaching the Confederate lines, as Grant's pressure on Petersburg continued to tighten.
