North Carolina units that honorably and gallantly participated in the action at Reams Station on August 25, 1864, included infantry in Lane's Brigade, the Seventh, Eighteenth, Twenty-Eighth, Thirty-Third, and Thirty-Seventh regiments; Scale's Brigade, the Thirteenth, Sixteenth, Twenty-Second, Thirty-Fourth, and Thirty-Eighth regiments; Cooke's Brigade, the Fifteenth, Twenty-Seventh, Forty-Sixth, and Forty-Eighth regiments; Kirkland's-MacRae's Brigade, the Eleventh, Twenty-Sixth, Forty-Fourth, Forty-Seventh, and Fifty-Second regiments; and cavalry in Gorden's-Barringer's Brigade, the First, Second, Third, and Fifth regiments. R.E. Lee said, "If the men who remain in North Carolina share the same spirit of those they have sent to the field, as I doubt not they do, her defense may securely trusted to their hands."
