Snowy Mountain, the highest point in Hamilton County, New York, is a prominent Adirondack summit noted for rising distinctly above the surrounding landscape. Once called Squaw Bonnet, it has a recorded history of ascent and survey work reaching back to 1771, when Archibald Campbell reportedly climbed it during Mohawk land-purchase negotiations. In the nineteenth century, Adirondack Survey crews repeatedly used the summit for triangulation. After major forest fires in the early twentieth century, New York established a fire observation station there, later replacing and enlarging its tower before closing it in 1971. Restored and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001, the mountain remains a popular hiking and climbing destination.
