El Paso is the largest U.S. city on the Mexican border, named for the mountain pass. It was a historic gateway for Indians, priests, gold-seekers, traders, and stages. During the Civil War, federal troops occupied this area longer than any other in Texas. It became an agricultural, industrial, and military center, and is associated with Texas Western College and Spanish missions.
