Preston Buenaga struggled throughout his life with the difficulties caused by Mitochondrial Disease, but his family always included him in their activities. He loved going to the playground, where his big brother would run and play while Preston watched and tried to keep up on equipment that was not adaptable for him. During a family trip to Virginia Beach, he was able to play with his cousins at an all inclusive playground. After Preston's mother Deb shared that experience with her friend Nic DeCaire and said she wished there were more all inclusive playgrounds, Nic proposed building one in Newark. With support from the City of Newark, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, and many individuals, corporations, and foundations, three years later Preston's Playground grew from a conversation over coffee into a place created so every child could play together.
