Nine local soldiers killed in action during World War I are remembered here: PVT Dilmus Brown, PVT Fred Foster, PVT Edgar Coots, PVT Willie H. Davis, PVT Lewis S. Fields, PVT Manus Sanders, PVT Andrew Jacks, PVT Lincoln Jackson, and PVT Pencila W. Thomas. Their memory is joined with John McCrae’s poem "In Flanders Fields," which evokes poppies blowing among the crosses, larks singing above the guns, the dead recalling that they recently lived and were loved, and a charge to the living to continue their quarrel with the foe and keep faith with those who died.
