In Laclede, Missouri, the Pershing family home and the nearby Prairie Mound School preserve the early life of John J. Pershing, who lived there from childhood into adulthood and taught at the one-room school before entering military service. Built around 1857 and purchased by his family in 1866, the Gothic Revival house anchors a site focused on his upbringing, education, and first work as a teacher before West Point and later leadership of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. Saved from demolition in 1952, the property was dedicated in 1960 and later gained state and national historic recognition.
