About three miles east of Meadville, Missouri, the Locust Creek Covered Bridge preserves the longest of the state’s four surviving covered bridges. Built in 1868 by Bishop and Eaton for Linn County as a crossing over Locust Creek, it is a white pine Howe truss strengthened with iron rods. For decades it carried wagons, horses, pedestrians, and later automobiles on Missouri Route 8, while also serving as a local gathering place. Bypassed in 1930 and later left spanning a dry, silted creek bed, it was acquired by Missouri in 1968, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, and preserved through major repairs and elevation.
