The town of St. Leonard was originally at the mouth of St. Leonard Creek in 1663. By 1706, when it was chartered by the Maryland General Assembly as a port of entry, it had been moved to the head of the creek near here. British forces burned its wharves and warehouses on July 4, 1814. After 1900, the town gradually shifted to its present location 3 miles north.
