Thunderbird Mesa is a prominent summit in Monument Valley on Navajo Nation land in northeastern Arizona, rising steeply above its surroundings near the visitor center. Its officially adopted name comes from a thunderbird-shaped outline visible on its east side. The mesa is part of the isolated landforms that define the valley’s skyline, with runoff draining toward Gypsum Creek and the San Juan River. Its layered geology reflects the region’s character: Organ Rock Shale forms the lower slopes, De Chelly Sandstone creates the cliffs, and the Moenkopi Formation caps the top. Shaped by differential erosion, it stands within a semi-arid landscape where geology, place-naming, and desert environment are closely linked.
