This land is the traditional territory of the Me-Wuk, also known as the Southern Sierra Miwok. Land acknowledgements are a way people insert awareness of Indigenous presence and land rights into everyday life, often at the beginning of ceremonies, lectures, and education guides. They offer an explicit but limited recognition of the history of colonialism and first nations, as well as a need for change in settler-colonial societies. The Native Lands map is intended for educational purposes, is imperfect, and does not represent or intend to represent official or legal boundaries of any Indigenous nations; definitive boundaries should be obtained from the nation.
