The Ferguson Fire was a major California wildfire in 2018 that burned across the Sierra and Stanislaus National Forests and parts of Yosemite National Park. Started by superheated fragments from a faulty vehicle catalytic converter igniting roadside vegetation, it spread rapidly through steep, hazardous terrain and threatened communities, roads, power lines, and access routes near the Merced River corridor and Yosemite’s western approaches. Closures and evacuations disrupted travel and recreation across the region, including Yosemite Valley and nearby communities. Fire crews mounted extensive suppression efforts, but two firefighters were killed, nineteen were injured, and the fire caused at least $171.2 million in damage and losses.
