Kendrick Mountain Wilderness is a 6,510-acre protected area on northern Arizona’s Coconino Plateau, north of Flagstaff. Established by Congress in 1984 as a U.S. Wilderness Area, about two thirds of it lies within Kaibab National Forest. The wilderness is centered on Kendrick Peak, which reaches 10,418 feet and has supported a fire lookout since the early 1900s. In 2000, the 15,000-acre Pumpkin Fire heavily affected the area, and its burn scars are still visible around the mountain and along hiking routes. Restoration efforts aimed at returning the forest toward pre-fire conditions have included occasional cattle grazing near the Kendrick Mountain Trail trailhead.
