Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, founded on September 1, 1772 by Father Junípero Serra in present-day downtown San Luis Obispo, became the fifth Alta California mission after the area's resources and a successful hunting expedition recommended it as a favorable site. Built with Chumash labor, its early structures were burned during Native resistance to colonization and then rebuilt in adobe and tile. The mission is distinguished by its unique architecture, including California's only L-shaped mission church. Expanded through 1819, later secularized and sold in 1845, it also served civic uses before restorations in the 20th century reaffirmed its place as the symbolic and religious center of San Luis Obispo.
