The U.S.S. Cisco, SS 290, was lost on September 28, 1943, in an antisubmarine attack by enemy ships and aircraft at 9° 9' 47" N, 121° -44' E, and its 76 officers and men gave their lives so that others could remain free. Cisco is counted among 52 U.S. Navy submarines still on patrol from World War II, on board which 374 officers and 3131 men remain. Fleet Admiral C.W. Nimitz said that U.S. submarines paid heavily for their success in World War II and held the lines against the enemy while fleets replaced losses and repaired wounds. Vice Admiral C. A. Lockwood, Jr., commander of the Submarine Force from 1943 to 1946, said they went down fighting and that their surviving brothers took a grim toll on the enemy to avenge their deaths.
