Potawatomi Trail of Death

On Oct. 5, 1838, about 800 Potawatomi Indians camped at McKee’s Creek near here during the forced removal from Indiana to Kansas known as the Trail of Death. They crossed the Illinois River by ferry, and after leaving the river they had to seek water because of the severe drought of ’38.
