Crane County was formed from Tom Green County, created on February 26, 1887, and organized on September 3, 1927. It was named in honor of William Carey Crane, who lived from 1816 to 1885 and was a Baptist minister and president of Baylor University from 1863 to 1885. Crane is the county seat.
