Red Mountain Wilderness is a 18,729-acre protected area in southwestern Utah, northeast of St. George, established on March 30, 2009, under the Omnibus Public Land Management Act. Bordering Snow Canyon State Park and the Shivwitz Indian Reservation, it includes about half its area within the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area. Named for Red Mountain, a large Navajo sandstone formation, the wilderness is shaped by the Gunlock Fault, the Santa Clara River valley, and Snow Canyon. Where the Mojave and Great Basin deserts meet, it supports diverse plant life and wildlife. Human use long predates federal protection, with documented prehistoric Southern Paiute sites and notable archaeological density.
