The Williams Hotel was constructed on this site in 1877 at a cost of $40,000 by William H. Williams. With its 150-seat restaurant, bar, and nine businesses, it offered welcome respite to weary train and stage travelers. Names found in the hotel register included Cadillac, Studebaker, and others. The hotel was destroyed by fire on February 22, 1923. Through funds raised by the Citizens for a Better Williams, donations from many supporters, and the efforts of California muralist John Ton, the Williams Hotel once again graces the corner of 7th and E Streets.
