Clifton
History
Clifton stood one mile north and was the home of Carter Henry Harrison on land patented in 1723. As a member of the Cumberland Committee of Safety, Harrison wrote the instructions for independence, adopted April 22, that the county delegates presented to the Virginia convention in May 1776. Apparently this was the first such declaration to be publicly approved, and the convention declared for independence.
