Square Top is a 7,412-foot mountain in Reds Canyon within Utah’s San Rafael Swell, rising sharply from Bureau of Land Management land above the canyon floor and draining through Muddy Creek and the Dirty Devil River to the Colorado. Officially recognized by the United States Board on Geographic Names, it has the profile of an isolated butte because it climbs about 1,200 feet in only half a mile. Its summit is capped by the Kayenta Formation above sheer Wingate Sandstone, with older Chinle and Moenkopi formations exposed nearby. Uplift during the Laramide Orogeny and long erosion shaped its present form in this cold semi-arid desert landscape.
