Wild Horse Butte is a prominent summit in Goblin Valley State Park on the southeastern edge of the San Rafael Swell, rising sharply above the surrounding desert. Its layered slopes expose four Jurassic rock formations, including the Morrison Formation at the top and the Entrada Sandstone below, linking it to the broader geology of the Colorado Plateau and to the hoodoos of Goblin Valley. The butte also figured in western exploration when John C. Frémont’s fifth expedition stopped there in January 1854 and Solomon Nunes Carvalho made a daguerreotype of it. Today it is notable for both its stratified geology and its place in early expedition photography.
