Arts & Culture
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, stands on Lake Erie as both a museum and a symbolic center of popular music history. Founded through a 1983 foundation created by Ahmet Ertegun, it began inducting artists before Cleveland secured the permanent site in 1986 through fundraising and the city’s ties to Alan Freed, WMMS, and early rock history. Designed by I. M. Pei and dedicated in 1995, the museum explores rock’s roots in gospel, blues, folk, country, and other traditions, while exhibitions span artists, movements, radio, protest, and regional scenes. Its induction weeks in Cleveland became major civic events.
