Little Walker Mountain is a protected wildland in western Virginia’s George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, recognized as a Mountain Treasure and included in the Walker Mountain Cluster. Its four mountains, seven stream headwaters, and the watershed feeding Gatewood Reservoir make it important both ecologically and as a water source for Pulaski. The Ridge and Valley landscape supports diverse forests, rare species such as sword-leaved phlox, surviving table mountain pine, a class III wild trout stream, and stands of old-growth trees. Though old logging roads, railroad grades, pioneer routes, a prehistoric camp, and overgrown homesites remain, the area is now managed chiefly for conservation, remote backcountry use, and source-water protection.
