Over the decades, dedicated volunteers of Citizen's Fire Company No. 1 invested countless hours in training, practice, and responding to thousands of fires and accidents, often requiring long hours away from family, employment, and relaxation and sometimes involving risk and danger. The first recorded injury occurred in 1929, when volunteer E.T Wright received severe burns on his forearms from boiling tar on a burning roof. Their service extended beyond firefighting. In both 1936 and 1972, Newport was swamped by the overflowing Juniata River and area creeks, again demanding long hours away from family and employment. During the 1936 flood, water rose to over five feet along properties on Front and Market Street, and after the waters receded, the fire company helped many residents empty water from their cellars and washed mud and debris from the streets. In 1947, an attic fire left 22 people homeless in six row houses along South Front Street and Catherine Alley. Numerous firemen were injured and burned over the years, but none died while on duty.
