In 1919, driving champion Ralph DePalma, winner of hundreds of races, set a new one-mile record on the beach in a 905 cubic inch V-12 powered Packard at 149.875 mph. He also set world records for distances from 2 to 20 miles and for the standing mile. His standing mile record of 92.713 mph remained unbroken for 36 years.
