Asa Ames, who lived from 1823 to 1851, was a celebrated folk artist whose wood carvings are exhibited in many acclaimed folk art museums. The site is also the Pioneer Cemetery, used from 1810 to 1928 as the burial ground of early settlers in Evans, including veterans of the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, and it was placed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
