Hayes Lake State Park in northwestern Minnesota near Roseau was established in 1967 and dedicated in 1973. Named for local advocate A.H. Hayes, it provides walking and biking trails and links with Beltrami Island State Forest for horseback riding, skiing, and snowmobile travel. Its northern forest and lakeshore habitat support a wide range of wildlife, including black bears, moose, bobcat, river otter, deer, beaver, marten, Canadian lynx, and timber wolf. Loons, herons, grebes, and other water birds are also commonly seen there, making the park notable for both outdoor recreation and northern Minnesota wildlife.
