On the morning of April 2, 1865, near the center of the battle that decided the nine-month campaign for Petersburg and Richmond, fourteen thousand Union soldiers attacked Confederate defenses in the pre-dawn darkness. The fighting here marked the beginning of the end of the American Civil War, and the surviving defenses still stand in the woods across the historic landscape where the battle occurred.
