Camp's Ferry was established in 1855 to cross the Sabine River. L.B. Camp, for whom the ferry was named, located the crossing on part of the 640 acres he purchased for $1000. He was authorized to charge 10¢ for a person on foot to cross the river, and $1.00 for a wagon and four yoke of oxen or horses. Because there were no bridges at the time, the ferry was needed to cross the river.
