On September 26, 1942, a B-26B bomber flying from Ft. Wayne to Presque Isle, Maine, and then to an active theater of operations crashed in a field just outside Ft. Jennings. All seven crew members were killed, and their bodies were never recovered. The dead were Second Lieut. Eugene L. Newton of Kansas City, Mo.; SSGT Patrick Joseph Nelligan of Santa Rosa, Ca.; Second Lieut. Fred Bice of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Private Robert Risetter of Des Moines, Ia.; Private Arnold A. Wildt of Broadmead, Ore.; Technical Sgt. Alexander J. Lamison Jr of Three Springs, Pa.; and Private Orley R. Colestock of Hecla, S.D.
