Boyd County, created in 1860 from parts of Greenup, Carter, and Lawrence, lies where Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky meet. Linked to Ohio by two bridges over the Ohio River and to West Virginia by two more across the Big Sandy River, it serves as a marketing area for some 420,805 people living within 60 miles of Ashland, the largest city, and Catlettsburg, the county seat at the confluence of the Ohio and Big Sandy River. The county offers nearby state parks, manmade lakes, downtown Ashland’s 33-acre Central Park, a publicly owned Tennis Center with twelve outdoor and four indoor courts, and strong high school athletic facilities. Cultural attractions include the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center, the Pendleton Art Center, the Paramount Arts Center, and the Jesse Stuart Foundation. The Ashland and Catlettsburg Floodwall Mural Projects continue to grow and feature the first quilt blocks on floodwalls in the nation, while the Ashland Boyd County Quilt Alley adds more blocks each year. Annual events include Poage Landing Days, Summer Motion, the Catlettsburg Labor Day Celebration, and Central Park’s Winter Wonderland of Lights. Boyd County is home to four high schools, including Boyd County and Ashland Paul Blazer, as well as Fairview and Rose Hill Christian, and also includes Ashland Community and Technical College, a branch campus of Morehead State University, and Southland Bible Institute. Ashland is identified as the birthplace of the Judds—Wynonna, Naomi, and Ashley—and of Billy Ray Cyrus.
