On old maps, this region was referred to as the Cinder Buttes. Rising more than 700 feet above the surrounding landscape and spreading across more than three square miles, the tallest and largest of these features was named Big Cinder Butte. It is one of more than 25 cinder cones in this landscape and harbors an open grove on its shady northeastern slope.
