Walking off trails has damaged spatter cones, among the rarest volcanic features on earth. Photographs taken at different times show that unrestricted visitor use left these fragile volcanic cones scarred and worn, and over the years the footsteps of numerous people eroded away the top two feet of the cones. In the 1980s, a rehabilitation project removed trails, installed railings, and restricted travel to paved trails. Erosion slowed but continued, leading to further steps in the twenty-first century to preserve this chain of mini-volcanos for future generations.
