Many motor vehicle accidents occurred on Route 66 despite the benefits of a paved road. In 1959, the Shrine of Our Lady of the Highways was erected to remind motorists of the potential dangers and to offer a place to say a prayer for a safe journey. The site is lovingly maintained by the Marten family.
